EACH KACHINA DOLL PICTURED HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN
ORIGINAL "HOPI KACHINA" HAVING A PERSONALITY UNTO ITSELF.
Suyangevhoya
5 1/2" high
#155

This katsina uses the left hand more skillfully than the right. He is commonly referred to as the Lefthanded Katsina. "Lefthanded" perhaps is not a full description of this katsina. Amore complete meaning of a "Suyangevu" is one whose preference is doing things "opposite" of what is considered normal. For an example, normally, a katsina would carry their rattle on the right hand, and bows and arrows on their left hand. His preference is to carry these dancing objects on the opposite hands. Also, normally, a turtle shell is worn on the right leg and stumping rythem of dancing to the songs is performed with a right leg. But, not the Suyangevhoya, he dresses and dances opposite of what would be the norm.
The Suyangevhoya appears singly during the Powamuya in February. He also can appear with a group of Mixed Katsinam during the Aunk'wa which is the katsina night dance season in March. When katsina day dances of Mixed Katsinam appear he surely will come with them. He has a friendly disposition portraying different characteristics. Most common character is that of a hunter, carrying a bow and arrows or a puutskohu (boomerang) which is used as a weapon to kill small game.

Each Kachina doll represents the benevolent spirit being who live among the Hopi for a six-month period each year. They first arrive on the Hopi mesa's in February and return to their spiritual homes in July. It is an honor to receive or own an authentic Hopi Kachina doll. Kachina tradition is unique only to the Pueblo Tribes of Arizona and New Mexico. Kachina's are spiritual rain messengers that bring special blessings as an indigenous part of the sacred Hopi lifeway...The Oldest living religion on the North American continent going back before recorded time.
