EACH KACHINA DOLL PICTURED HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN
ORIGINAL "HOPI KACHINA" HAVING A PERSONALITY UNTO ITSELF.
Mongwu Great Horned Owl
10 1/2" high
#142

Mongwu is a great horned owl who plays several roles. In this case, he is a hunter who carries prayers for plentifulness of wild game for food source for all mankind. Since he is a hunter, he is carrying a bow and arrow, and wearing a bow-quiver on his back. His body marks are that of a warrior. He also plays a significant role in bringing the whipper katsina to punish the clowns during the summer katsina dances. He plays the role of sorcerer, jointly planning with the cheif clown, in secrecy, the punishment attack on the clowns. The clowns are mischevious in character, who purposely act out unacceptable way of life, a lifestyle that is not the Hopi way. Due to their playful and irresponsible behavior, they are punished by the whipper katsinam. Symbolically, their punishment represents that life of all mankind is purified, and the acceptable behavior will prevail throughout the entire world, thereby resulting in "unity" among nations.

They first arrive on the Hopi mesa's in February and return to their spiritual homes in July. It is an honor to receive or own an authentic Hopi Kachina doll. Kachina tradition is unique only to the Pueblo Tribes of Arizona and New Mexico. Kachina's are spiritual rain messengers that bring special blessings as an indigenous part of the sacred Hopi lifeway...The Oldest living religion on the North American continent going back before recorded time.
