EACH KACHINA DOLL PICTURED HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN
ORIGINAL "HOPI KACHINA" HAVING A PERSONALITY UNTO ITSELF.
Priest Killer
10 1/2" high
#135

Yowi is an Ogre Kachina. He may be regarded as a diety of certain Hopi Warrior Clans, having supremely powerful inner spiritual responsibility to punish including taking of life. He is now referred to by the non-Hopi people as the Priest Killer because he carried out the beheading of the priest during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680. The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and Arizona revolted against the Catholic church in order to retain and have the freedom of practicing their own religion.

Each Kachina doll represents the benevolent spirit being who live among the Hopi for a six-month period each year. They first arrive on the Hopi mesa's in February and return to their spiritual homes in July. It is an honor to receive or own an authentic Hopi Kachina doll. Kachina tradition is unique only to the Pueblo Tribes of Arizona and New Mexico. Kachina's are spiritual rain messengers that bring special blessings as an indigenous part of the sacred Hopi lifeway...The Oldest living religion on the North American continent going back before recorded time.
